Nobody Sees the Editing

What we rarely celebrate is everything that made those moments possible.

The revisions.

The practice.

The conversations.

The systems.

The follow-up.

Organizations are no different.

Everyone notices the successful project.

A few weeks ago, I spent hours editing video. Not recording it. Editing it. Watching the same thirty seconds over and over.

Deleting words.

Moving clips.

Changing transitions.

Removing things I thought were brilliant two days earlier.

None of that work will ever be noticed. People will watch the finished reel and either connect with it or they won't. No one will ever compliment the edit at minute 1:17. That's how most meaningful work happens. We celebrate launches.

Promotions.

Keynotes.

Awards.

What we rarely celebrate is everything that made those moments possible.

The revisions.

The practice.

The conversations.

The systems.

The follow-up.

Organizations are no different.

Everyone notices the successful project

Few people notice the dozens of small improvements that made success possible.

The updated process.

The clarified roles.

The cleaner handoffs.

The meeting that finally didn't need to happen. None of those things are glamorous.

They're also where most organizational improvement actually lives.

Great work isn't usually built in one big moment.

It's built through hundreds of small decisions that nobody applauds.

The invisible work is often the most valuable work.

That's true whether you're editing a keynote or helping an organization move work more effectively.

One more thing... if you're wondering... "why the vegetables?", the pictures have absolutely NOTHING to do with this article. 😄 It just gave me an excuse to show off the vegetables I picked from my garden!
