Culture isn’t shaped by inspirational posters in the breakroom. It’s shaped by leaders’ behavior. And nothing poisons culture faster than insecurity.
How Insecurity Shows Up
Micromanaging every task.
Refusing to share information.
Hiring less-qualified people so they won’t feel threatened.
Avoiding hard conversations out of fear.
The Ripple Effect
Insecure leadership leads to:
Loss of trust.
Stagnation.
High turnover.
I once worked with a manager who refused to promote her best team member. Why? She was afraid of being outshined. Within six months, that employee left. Within a year, half the department followed. One person’s fear became a whole department’s exodus.
From the outside, insecure leaders often look busy — late-night emails, endless tasks. But busyness ≠ leadership.
So in a nutshell... if you want to protect your culture? Start with your leaders’ confidence.
